Champagne Creek Ranch Incorporated has made their first significant donation to aid in outdoor recreation opportunities for handicapped citizens in Douglas County.

Champagne Creek Ranch Incorporated has made their first significant donation to aid in outdoor recreation opportunities for handicapped citizens in Douglas County.

A release said the non-profit entity is in partnership with Greater Douglas United Way in the effort.

On Tuesday, Virgil Osborne and Randy Rubin from Champagne Creek Ranch, presented a $4,000 check to Greater Douglas United Way Executive Director Bryan Trenkle. The release said the donation is intended to help fund efforts that would give the handicapped access to the benefits of spending time in primitive outdoor environments.

Champagne Creek’s release said that “Douglas County is home to many diverse and beautiful landscapes from water falls, lakes and streams to rugged mountains with spectacular viewpoints”. However, many handicapped people have difficulty experiencing a number of these areas. The group is hoping to help fund handicapped boat ramp access improvements, trail improvements for safe motorized access, and equipment to be used for such purposes such as specialized wheelchairs or even fuel for a field trip up into the mountains.

Portions of the 204-acre property in Lookingglass that makes up Champagne Creek Ranch was formerly used as a landfill, and more recently a transfer station. It was donated to the group by Douglas County government.

Organizers say that since taking over the property, Champagne Creek Ranch has partnered with organizations like Douglas County Search and Rescue and Lookingglass Fire and Rescue to provide outdoor training space. The group has worked with bicycle enthusiasts to create a world class downhill mountain bike trail. They have also put on events for the Side by Side and 4×4 community.

A portion of the funds generated by the Side by Side and 4×4 events are being donated to United Way. Remaining funds are used for property improvements and to cover property related expenses.

Tim Allen from the Champagne Creek Ranch board will talk more about their plans on the Morning Conversation Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. on News Radio 1240 KQEN.
